About me

Hello there! My name is Mandy Newport, and I am an archaeologist and educator. Like many others, the COVID-19 pandemic brought significant changes to my life. I spent thirteen years teaching in classrooms and museums, which I truly enjoyed. However, my passion for exploring history and learning about humanity's stories led me to return to school and pursue archaeology in 2020.

Archaeology and education are a perfect match, as archaeology provides a hands-on approach to history that is more engaging than traditional textbook learning. Working at an arts-based school for students with learning differences for seven years reinforced my belief that hands-on learning is the best way to acquire knowledge. Connecting kinesthetically with the materials from our past is a unique experience that can stay with learners of all ages for a lifetime. Archaeology analyzes material culture, such as artifacts, heritage sites, and cultural landscapes, providing a multi-sensory experience that delves into human activity.

I am passionate about exploring obscure human stories and am determined to shed light on those that have been disregarded by mainstream history. My primary goal is to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions by exploring the experiences of marginalized groups. I rely heavily on material culture to investigate these inquiries and challenge traditional notions.

I believe merging education and archaeology can offer unique opportunities for engaging and meaningful learning experiences. By incorporating archaeology into the classroom and educational programs in the community, we can explore and share knowledge in exciting ways.

Although visiting heritage sites in person would be ideal, virtual transportation can bring us closer to uncovering human stories and making learning fun.

I incorporate history and archaeology into the classroom through curriculum writing and educational programming. My lesson plans emphasize analyzing material culture, such as artifacts, heritage sites, and cultural landscapes, providing a multi-sensory experience that delves into human activity.

I cater activities to different learning styles and have extensive experience working with students who have learning differences.
